Exhibition Expedition : Oldham Art Gallery
Hiya!
Recently,
I went to my local library which had a built in gallery and a few exhibitions
going on. It was then, I noticed some really dope sculptures, historical
paintings and, would you have thought, some SCREEN PRINTS! I was actually
really surprised by the content I came across when attending the exhibition,
there was a lot of historical references about Manny C ( Manchester) and Oldham
that I didn't know about. Like famous feminist, Emmeline Pankhurst was born in
Moss side, Manchester and I had no idea. (regardless of the fact that her
statue was being transported all over Manny C
Emmeline
Pankhurst
I
also had no idea that she and I share the same birthday. ( 14th or the 15th of
July, its still a debate!) After seeing this, it inspired me on a mental and
emotional level to pursue and challenge myself to keep going on my freelance
career. Because, if she was brave enough to help as many people (both women and
men) during those difficult, restrictive times, then the rest of us really
don't have an excuse , if it's something we really want.
Afterwards,
there were many Victorian watercolour and acrylic paintings, which did inspire
me on a creative level. As well as sculptures of woodland creatures, that I
know would make great monoprints and ideal drawing practices. Lastly, towards
the end I did stop by an exhibition of screen prints made by a screen printing
class. As you can see by the, images below, there was a lot of vivid colours
and techniques used to create these prints. Which I know would be great to
experiment with my future screen prints.
This
experience has taught me to not be so, excuse my slang, "Boujee" or
narrow-minded when it comes to local, free galleries or libraries. As there are
plenty of amazing art or visual references in those areas and not just in the
central, glamorous, ticket-paying exhibitions. That if you feel stagnant or
having creators block, just stepping outside can work wonders.
